Cape Otway Lightstation, Lighthouse Rd, Cape Otway VIC 3233, Australia

Cape Otway Lighthouse

Cape Otway Lighthouse is the oldest surviving lighthouse on mainland Australia and considered the most significant. This leading attraction on the Great Ocean Road is a must for all visitors.

Built in 1848, the lighthouse known as the ‘Beacon of Hope,’ sits 90 metres above the pristine ocean of Bass Strait.

The light was first lit in 1848 using a first order Fresnel lens; it was the second lighthouse completed on mainland Australia and it remains the oldest surviving lighthouse in mainland Australia. It was decommissioned in January 1994 after being the longest continuous operating light on the Australian mainland.

During winter to spring, the lighthouse is a vantage point for land-based whale watching as migrating whales swim very close to shores.

The Twelve Apostles, Great Ocean Road, Port Campbell Victoria, Australia

The Twelve Apostles (Victoria)

The Twelve Apostles is a collection of limestone stacks off the shore of Port Campbell National Park, by the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia.

One of Australia's most popular attractions all year round, never had 12 rock stacks despite the name "Twelve Apostles". "There were nine rock stacks at the beginning of the 21st century. Then at 9:18am on 3 July 2005, one of them collapsed. Another collapsed in 2009". (Parks Victoria)

Additional stacks—not considered part of the Apostles group—are located to the west within the national park.

View the 12 Apostles at sunrise and sunset as they change colour from dark and foreboding in shadow to brilliant sandy yellow under a full sun.
